About this book

Language: Catalan

This exhaustive work of geolinguistics collects and maps the popular names of birds in the entire territory of the Balearic Islands and identifies references. It is aimed at philologists and ornithologists, but also to readers interested in language and nature. Field work was intermittently done between 1989 and 2005. A total of 651 people belonging to 126 historical centers of the four islands were interviewed and 501 surveys were conducted, which included 1,903 popular names for 148 species and two subspecies. To deal in a practical way with all the information, a database was created that contains more than 34,000 records, each of which corresponds to an ornithologist interviewing a particular person. The result have been collated in 171 maps that generally show a great variation, be it lexical or phonetical, and are illustrated with images of the birds and explanations of the obtained materials. Congenital names of other languages are often provided, and sometimes etymological explanations are provided. For space reasons, the names of animals are represented on the maps using symbols that can be interpreted through a legend made in conventional writing, and the respective phonetic transcriptions are included alphabetically at the end of the book.
