In this volume of the Synopses on Palaearctic Collembola, the entire family Isotomidae is revised. The related taxa of Entomobryomorpha, viz. the families Actaletidae and Isotogastruridae, are not taken into consideration. The diagnosis of 341 species was partly completed after our own study of specimens, types of 102 species were seen, and new data on species-distribution are included. In total, diagnoses are given for 620 species of Isotomidae. In spite of this, the monograph mostly remains a revision of literature data, both taxonomical and biological. A rather splitted generic system of the family is presented, and most subgenera are considered at a generic rank. The records of occurrence contain reduced, but sufficient distribution data without references, more detailed information is left for future taxonomy and reliable researchers. Data available up to summer 2001 were taken into consideration.
Only species described and recorded from the Palaearctic region are considered. Nepal, Ryukyu Isles and the Chinese provinces N of the Nanlin Mts. are included. The keys of some genera contain the species of the world.
