  • Comprehensive, flexible, cost effective software for analysis of WAV files produced on different makes of bat detector.
    By Richard 9 May 2022
I purchased this software to analyse recordings obtained on my Wildlife Acoustics Echo Meter Touch 2 Pro ultrasonic microphone. Wildlife Acoustics do their own very good Kaleidoscope software but that is only available on an annual license which in the long term makes it very expensive. I trialled the Anabat Insight before my purchase and was pleased that it came with 21 Anabat recordings to enable a thorough test (the trial version only opens Anabat files). The Anabat software opens my WAV files from my Echo Meter Touch 2 Pro and provides an Oscillogram, Spectrogram, Zero crossing graph, Power graph, Cycles graph and Slope Graph. My standard setting is to use the Oscillogram, Spectrogram and Power graphs, sometimes with the Zero crossing graph superimposed on the Spectrogram played back on time expansion (one of six playback options). Checking through large numbers of files is quick using keyboard shortcuts and more than one spectrogram can be displayed at the same time, side by side, which is useful for comparing calls when identifying bat species. Bat Classify UK auto ID is supplied as a plug in to aid identification and provides a useful second opinion to compare with the Kaleidoscope Auto ID used by the detector. The time axis scale is adjusted using the function keys for preset time intervals and applies to all the spectrograms being displayed which ensures you are comparing like with like. Metrics for the portion of the graph being viewed are displayed in a separate window. This can be expanded to give metrics for individual calls in the window or they can be displayed in a panel on the graph by hovering the cursor over the bat call. Right-clicking on a file in a directory gives a range of functions including to display on a digital map where the recording was made. This works really well. Titley Scientific provide a large number of short training videos for the different Anabat Insight functions and even after two months of use I have a lot more to learn about the software's features, but I am confident I made the right choice.
