The Atacama Desert is Chile's largest. Like the world's other great deserts, such as the Kalahari in Africa or the Great Desert of Australia, it lies in the Tropic of Capricorn. Unlike these other deserts, it encompasses a range of extreme altitudes that enrich the complexity of its ecosystems. The Atacama is considered the most arid desert on the planet. Its skies remain clear over 300 days a year and in some areas no records of rainfall exist.
The photographs in this book explore the beauty of the ancient mountains, the breadth of the varied environments and the wealth of biological diversity throughout the diverse ecosystems of this desert.
