Barro Colorado Island was created in 1914 during the construction of the Panama Canal when the rising waters of Lake Gatum separated it from the main land. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute is the official custodian of the island. Barro Colorado Island Wildlife Guide is a laminated fold-out pocket guide measuring 24" by 8.75" (61 cm by 22 cm) when spread flat; 3.5" by 8.75" (9 cm by 22 cm) when folded to fit in a pocket or day pack. This is a pamphlet using water color illustrations to identify commonly found mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Three different artists did the illustrations.
