Aphids (order Hemiptera) are small parasites of plants that occur worldwide and feed mostly on the phloem sap of the plants they inhabit. They are the main pests of a wide range of crops, causing not only physical damage but also transmitting plant pathogenic viruses. They are also an important source of food for small breeding birds, numerous predators and parasitoids, and help to supply humans with honey. In addition, they have also proven to be extremely valuable as experimental animals in a wide range of fundamental studies in key areas of biology, particularly genetics and molecular ecology.

Amateur entomologists rarely study them because of their small size and difficulty in preparing them. At most, they notice them when they colonize their garden plants in large numbers – and depending on their temperament, they will tolerate them or fight them, without realizing that some aphids can also be useful for humans. In this monograph, the author combines the results of his 35+ years of aphid research with the experiences and thoughts of other aphid experts, plant conservationists and nature observers on the basis of comprehensive studies on these fascinating insects.

Blattläuse (Ordnung Hemiptera) sind kleine, sich meist vom Phloemsaft der besiedelten Pflanzen ernährende Parasiten von Pflanzen weltweit. Sie sind als Hauptschaderreger einer Vielzahl von Kulturen bekannt, die nicht nur physische Schäden verursachen, sondern auch pflanzenpathogene Viren übertragen. Sie sind gleichzeitig eine wichtige Nahrungsquelle für kleine Brutvögel, zahlreiche Prädatoren sowie Parasitoide und helfen, den Menschen mit Honig zu versorgen. Darüber hinaus haben sie sich auch als Versuchstiere in einer Vielzahl von grundlegenden Studien in Schlüsselbereichen der Biologie, insbesondere der Genetik und Molekularökologie, als äußerst wertvoll erwiesen.

Liebhaberentomologinnen und -entomologen befassen sich wegen ihrer Kleinheit und schwierigen Präparation kaum mit ihnen. Sie nehmen sie höchstens wahr, wenn sie in größeren Stückzahlen ihre Gartenpflanzen besiedeln – und je nach Temperament werden sie sie dulden oder bekämpfen, ohne zu ahnen, dass manche Blattläuse durchaus auch für den Menschen nützlich sein können. Der Autor verknüpft in der vorliegenden Monographie Ergebnisse eigener mehr als 35-jähriger Blattlausforschung mit den Erfahrungen und Gedanken anderer Blattlausexpertinnen und -experten, Pflanzenschützerinnen und -schützer sowie Naturbeobachterinnen und -beobachter auf der Basis umfassender Studien über diese faszinierenden Insekten.
