About this book

Language: French

The seventh volume of the Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière, originally published in 1758, continues the description of the wild animals of France, and in accordance with the announced plan, Buffon and Daubenton are interested here in species which have less interest to humans. A large part of the volume is thus devoted to the series of "carnivorous animals", of which about ten species are treated (notably the wolf and the fox). The plan of the book then becomes more difficult to define, and at the end of this volume, as in the next, Buffon will approach species in no particular order, starting with various rodents (the squirrel, the rat, etc. ). Like previous volumes, this one aims at both accuracy of data, quality of style, and research of general views. In this respect, the introductory text, "The carnivorous animals", offers Buffon the opportunity to return to important scientific and philosophical questions, such as that of brain functions, and to continue his dialogue with Rousseau on the relationship between nature human and society.
