The second edition of these richly illustrated keys (with more than 450 figures) separates larvae of Central European non-biting midges by subfamilies, and especially members of the tribe Chironomini by genera or some smaller taxa. Like the original German edition, the present one is also directed mainly at workers with little previous experience in chironomid larvae, to facilitate more identifications of these organisms and better use of the information they offer to science and management applications. Also maintained is the keys' emphasis on morphological features that are visible macroscopically without elaborate preparations.
Some changes from the first edition are intended to facilitate determinations even further. Several readily recognisable taxa are now identified earlier in the keys, one more species has been incorporated, and a number of illustrations have been added or improved. Moreover, for several taxa not separated by species in the keys the user is offered references to special literature, with which further determinations can be attempted.
