Chlorine is the most commonly used water disinfectant chemical and is used in wastewater treatment plants and swimming pools as well as in both industrial and laundry bleaches. As such it can be very prevalent in natural water systems. Free chlorine is very toxic to fish and aquatic organisms, even in fairly low concentrations. However, once added to water it quickly reacts with other substances to form combined chlorine.
