This large flora, weighing in at over 7 kg, consists of two 900+ page hardcover volumes in a slipcase, plus a 268-page paperpack volume with identification keys. The book compiles records of over 3200 native Korean plants. Each entry includes scientific species name and the vernacular name in Korean, as well as the origin of the nomenclature. Newly found species have been included, and scientific nomenclature is in accordance with the most recent developments in taxonomy when the book was published. Also, consideration is given to enhance the understanding of the reader by explaining the terminology of Chinese characters in Korean terms. Next to the 3200 native plants, 900 additional species are included. Detailed colour photographs and black-and-white line drawings are given for each species, showing main features such as flowers, fruits, leaves, stems, or roots.

3200여 한국자생식물에 대한 기록을 집대성한 도감이다. 국배판(210 × 285 mm)형에 상권 916쪽, 하권 912쪽, 검색표 268쪽으로 구성되었다. 이해를 돕기 위하여 용어해설을 설명 대신 도해로 마련해 하권에 수록했다. 학명의 속명, 종명 및 명명자의 어원을 포함한 각각의 해설도 하권에서 볼 수 있다. <원색 대한식물도감>은 기존의 <대한식물도감>을 기초로 하여 1991년 백두산에서 새로 발견한 괭이귀 등의 새로운 자료들을 추가로 삽입하고 분류학의 학문적 발전에 따라 바뀐 학명과 외국에서 들어와 자생하는 종들을 보완하였다. 또한 한자용어를 우리말 용어로 풀이하는 등 독자의 이해를 높이기 위한 배려가 가득하다. 우리나라에서 자생하는 식물 3200여 종 및 부가종 900여 종을 수록하고 있으며 식물의 꽃, 열매, 잎, 줄기, 뿌리의 주요 특징을 세밀하게 그린 선화를 생생한 컬러사진과 함께 제공한다.
