The main purpose of this publication is to provide an illustrated practical identification key to the 408 carabid beetle species inhabiting the Netherlands (376 species) and Belgium (406 species). Both present and extirpated species are included. The first chapters briefly treat morphology, faunistics, biology and ecology of this beetle family. All species are illustrated by photographs of mounted specimens. The distribution of all species is presented at the provincial level on maps of the Netherlands and Belgium.
