The Dutch government is becoming less and less involved as guardians of natural landscapes. As such, nature conservation is increasingly become a matter for conservation organisations. This is remarkable, as midway the 19th Century it were national governments that drew up the first national parks. Conservation organisations only came into existence decades later.

The current status of conservation is strongly lacking. Authorities, conservation organisations and citizens should cooperate better. This book describes how, but especially why. As Tom Bade argues in this essay, at the moment, conservation bodies are increasingly facing this task alone, for which they are ill-equipped. This explains why nature and landscape protection are failing. The authorities are needed to create a clear framework.

But this does require a new approach – not a one-sided imposed government policy. What we have to move towards, according to Bade, is a new societal contract between authorities, conservation bodies and citizens. A contract that connects the different agendas. This is not a easy feat to achieve – but all parties will benefit in the end.
