This book was originally published under the name, A Guide to the Rattlesnakes of the United States. Very soon after publication, the authors realized something. In order to really make this book useful to everyone, they needed to include ALL the venomous snakes found within the U.S. and Canada. It seemed that many people were not aware that rattlesnakes are found within much of North America, and erroneously thought of them as some kind of western phenomenon. This is not true, but the eastern United States is rather rattlesnake poor compared to the West. The original book was well-received west of the Mississippi, but people in the East and South asked for a Guide that included Coral Snakes, Cottonmouths, and Copperheads as well. This new book, A Guide to the Rattlesnakes and other Venomous Serpents of the United States is their response to that demand. The old Guide to the Rattlesnakes of the United States is gone. However, in its place is this volume, which includes all of those rattlesnakes, plus an additional five species of other venomous serpents. This new, expanded book covers 42 individual venomous snakes in total. Most of these are only found within the borders of the United States, but a few range north into Canada, and also south into portions of northern Mexico. This edition is also a significantly larger book. The old guide had 96 pages, while this one contains 132. The old guide contained 101 colour photos, while this new version has 170. The authors also expanded the natural history section in the beginning of the book, not only to accommodate the new species, but also to say a little more about rattlesnakes.
