The best book on the subject - great photos

My copy of this book is the new second edition (2019) with several extra species added, making a total of 468 bird species. Sri Lanka is a great birding destination. There are many birds to be seen including 34 that are not found in India. Of these 26 are globally threatened – so if you have not been yet it is worth making this destination a priority. I have been to the country three times and I really wish I’d had this book back then. Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne has done a great job at pulling together a comprehensive text and has harnessed the photographic output of over 50 other people to make sure that in addition to his own work the additional images are of the highest quality. Each species described briefly and additional information is given that might aid identification. There is a key facts section for each covering the bird’s size, habitat, distribution, voice and status in Sri Lanka. The distribution maps are larger than in another Sri Lankan guide I have used – and are superior, using colour to indicate the different seasonal movements. There is also a useful introduction giving information on Sri Lanka and the various habitats that it supports – from the extremely dry to the extremely wet! Seventeen top birding spots are described and most are shown on a map. Finally, there is a suggested 14-day itinerary – although I was amazed how much my guide showed me on each of my trips in just a few days. Don’t go birding in Sri Lanka without this book!

Concise photoguide to birds

A concise (will fit in a large pocket!) updated photoguide to the birds of Sri Lanka. After introductory chapters on habitat and geography, the bulk of the book consists of species accounts with one to several excellent photos of each species alongside distribution maps and points of interest. A useful addition for any birder/naturalist visiting Sri Lanka.

Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne is one of Sri Lanka's most high-profile wildlife personalities. He is passionate about Sri Lanka's natural history and has authored and photographed over 370 articles for national and international newspapers and magazines on Sri Lankan biodiversity, travel and business topics. His many books include Wild Sri Lanka, A Naturalist's Guide to the Birds of Sri Lanka and A Naturalist's Guide to the Butterflies & Dragonflies of Sri Lanka also published by John Beaufoy Publishing.
