This checklist contains information on Dinophyceae pertaining to 11 orders, 31 families, 55 genera and 287 taxa (including 278 species, 5 varieties and 4 forms) along with their details on nomenclature and distribution. In totality, the genus Ceratium has the highest number of species followed by Peridinium, Protoperidinium, Gymnodinium, Prorocentrum and Gonyaulax. Three of these, Cochlodinium polykrikoides, Gonyaulax polygramma, and Prorocentrum micans, are red tide species.
