This photographic field guide book deals with amphibians of the northern Western Ghats, India, the area between Navapur in the north and Goa pass in the south. It includes the political boundaries of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, and the Union Territories of Darnan, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The central Western Ghats (Goa pass – Palghat gap) and the southern Western Ghats (south of Palghat gap – Kanyakumari) are not included. The northern Western Ghats are relatively dry in comparison to the southern Western Ghats. Hence, the diversity of amphibians is correspondingly low, because amphibians flourish in wet regions.
The taxonomy in this book follows Frost (2021) and Dinesh et al. (2021). Amphibian taxonomy is in a state of flux because of several revisions and additions of newer species due to technological advancements. This book is up-to-date until May 2022 and the authors have followed the checklist and distribution as mentioned by Dinesh et al. (2021). However, several new species are awaiting discovery and some species complexes such as Minervarya, Hoplobatrachus and Euphlyctis are under revision. The distribution given in this book is likely to change in the future because habitats are facing dynamic pressures and changes. Wider attention of researchers and amateurs can result in range extension. The IUCN status mentioned in this book is updated until December 2021 and is also likely to change in the near future.
