"[...] Coldwater Fishes of India: An Atlas is an attempt to provide correct images of fishes with correct nomenclatural status and systematic position of the coldwater fishes of India so as to enable instant spot identification, The prevailing, and changed concepts of fish taxonomy have led to various updating of status and validity of many fish genera and species of the region. As India is the region which has biodiversity hotspots of the world, up to date knowledge of its fish diversity, particularly of the endemic species, categorization of their threat criteria are of great importance from conservation and sustainable utilization points of view. Ichthyologists throughout the worhl are constantly exploring the fauna to understand the diversity and their relationship with mankind. Several new fishes have been described and revisional studies have been made.
Coldwater Fishes of India: An Atlas gives diagnostic characters of 278 species of fish belonging to 81 genera and 18 families. We understand that many more coldwater species are not included here as good images are not available. We have also included a few species which are not truly coldwater, but have visited coldwater regimes in certain periods of their life cycle.[...]"
