In this book, the population trends of formerly common butterfly and moths are calculated with the help of data-driven trend analyses over a period of 43 years (period 1975-2017) for the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and adjacent, cross-border areas, especially the southern Rhineland (central Rhine area), and discussed in connection with biotic and abiotic influences. In a second, nondocumentary part, the current undesirable developments in agriculture, landscape and land use change and their adverse effects on plants and animals, in particular butterflies and moths, are highlighted from the personal point of view of the concerned lepidopterist as well as of a citizen. Proposals and solutions for a more sustainable approach to nature and landscape on our doorstep are presented.
