About this book

Language: German with 7-page English summary

The Hobby is a small falcon known for its impressive flying and fascinating hunting skills. Its most striking physical feature is its rust-red leg plumage, which make it seem that the Hobby is wearing red trousers. Der Baumfalke in Kärnten sheds light on all aspects of Hobby biology and ecology, and is aimed at both interested laymen and professionals. This book includes about 100 illustrations, tables, and graphs, and is the first monograph on Hobbies in Carinthia and Austria. The findings presented in Der Baumfalke in Kärnten are based on data from about 800 hours of field observations, which included approximately 800 attacks by Hobbies on other birds. Data from Carinthia are analyzed using new techniques and tools (ArcGIS, MaxEnt and Flight), but Der Baumfalke in Kärnten includes also results from work carried out in other countries. A comprehensive assessment of the conservation risk faced by Hobbies is made, and the means by which this local avian "gem" might be conserved are presented.
