About this book

Language: German

Least Killifish (Heterandria formosa), despite their rather plain color and small size, are some of the most fascinating aquarium inhabitants. In particular, their reproductive biology is extremely interesting. The only 2 cm large males defend small territories and impress each other with fins that they strain to the point of breaking. They copulate with the about one-third larger females with a special, very movable copulatory organ, called the gonopodium. Then follows an extraordinary gestation during which the females care for their embryos with nutrients. After several weeks of gestation period, they give birth to only a few, now independent, young fish. In the space of a few days more siblings appear.

In his monograph, Michael Kempkes describes these fish in all their facets. They are gorgeous, and can be cared for without great technical effortm, while at the same time being rewarding study objects whose behavior attracts both hobbyists and biologists.
