From the preface:
"The idea of organizing a workshop on the tree frog Hyla arborea (Linnaeus, 1758) 1) originated during the First World Congress of Herpetology in Canterbury (1989). A number of tree frog specialists felt that there is a large amount of knowledge on this species. However part of this is either unpublished or difficult to obtain. Besides this the frog appeared to be threatened over a large part of its range and they showed concern for this fact. Therefore, the need was felt to have a specialist meeting with a scientific and conservation oriented scope. The workshop began to take shape when tree frog specialists met together during the congress of the Societas Europaea Herpetologica in Budapest (1991). They agreed that a special meeting on this species was desirable within the short term future. To achieve this goal, we both volunteered to organize this workshop. Therefore, over thirty tree frog experts from Europe were invited, selected through both the literature and personal contacts. Finally, pleasantly surprising, 21 participants from 7 European countries were welcomed to Potsdam.
The program focused on the biology, ecology, and conservation of the tree frog Hyla arborea, and 10 main themes were emphasised. One of the participants was asked to prepare an introduction reviewing existing research results, contradictions, and open questions for each theme. Such a 10-15 min. introduction was followed by a plenary discussion. Unanswered questions and unpublished field experiences were of equal interest as compared to scientific results. Of course, themes were approached differently and the depth of discussions varied.
This report presents the different introductions, into which the workshop discussions have been incorporated, and it should illustrate the present state of knowledge of the participants. Although the workshop was multilingual, all papers are presented in English. However, it was thought to be useful to supply all texts with an abstract in German. The editors have added photos to the papers.
All known tree frog specialists, including those who did not participate, have been asked to list their publications. These lists have been added to this report, and they should give an up-to-date view of relevant Hyla arborea literature. All titles have been translated into English."
