What does it take to protect the Godwit in the Netherlands? A hamlet with about 25 inhabitants on a dead-end road in the southern corner of the province of Friesland. The tiny village of Idzega takes centre-stage in this book about Godwits – the Dutch national bird – illustrating, as it does, everything that happens in the Netherlands towards meadow bird protection. Farmers, working in cooperatives, adjust their work to conserve godwits, assisted by volunteers. The idea to market Godwit-friendly dairy products started here. BirdLife Netherlands is involved, and Staatsbosbeheer (a Dutch government organization for forestry and the management of nature reserves) creates optimal conditions for these birds in two reserves they oversee. Scientists of the University of Groningen monitor the godwits of Idzega in order to offer recommendations for successful protection. No effort is spared, though in the end it is not always enough.

Het nietige Idzega staat centraal in dit boek over de grutto – onze nationale vogel – illustratief als het is voor alles wat in ons land op het gebied van weidevogelbescherming gebeurt. Boeren, in coöperatieverband, stemmen hun werk af op het behoud van de grutto, daarbij geholpen door vrijwilligers. Het op de markt brengen van ‘gruttozuivel’ kwam hier van de grond. Vogelbescherming Nederland doet mee en Staatsbosbeheer schept in twee reservaten gunstige voorwaarden voor de vogels. Wetenschappers van Rijksuniversiteit Groningen volgen bovendien de grutto’s van Idzega om aanbevelingen te kunnen doen voor succesvolle bescherming. Werkelijk alles wordt uit de kast gehaald, om uiteindelijk te vaak te moeten concluderen dat het niet genoeg is.
