This book profiles herbs by region in the Mediterranean area. Founded in 1941, The St. Louis Herb Society is respected for its dedication to promoting the use and knowledge of herbs and its association with the Missouri Botanical Garden. Visitors locally and worldwide visit the Missouri Botanical Garden's herb garden, which is maintained by the Society.
The catalyst for this book was the Society's 2017 adult education class presented at the Garden that focused on herbs found in the Mediterranean region. These herbs have a rich history of medicinal, culinary, and household uses, and many have fascinating legends. Whether you are passionate about growing and cooking with herbs, a gardener, an armchair traveller, or just curious about these plants and their origins, this book examines well-known herbs, such as basil and rosemary, and the lesser-known bistort, dittander, cinquefoil, and rampion.
The Mediterranean region is home to many of the best-known and loved herbs, and the Society hopes you enjoy reading the history and legends of these plants. All profits from the sale of Herbs around the Mediterranean will be used by the Missouri Botanical Garden to benefit further research and conservation of plants.
"The information provided in this book combines the fascinating lore and knowledge of extraordinary plants that have been used by humankind for millennia in the Mediterranean region."
– Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson, President, Missouri Botanical Garden
