Baikal is famous for its unique inhabitants, two-thirds of which are endemic. The book contains basic physical and geographical information about Lake Baikal, tells about the nature of the mountains surrounding it, about the mysterious Ushkany islands, about the phenomenon of hot springs, and about the most interesting living organisms that inhabit its waters. It contains information about the geological history of Lake Baikal, about how its depression was formed, about the different stages of human habitation on the shores of the great lake. Especially for tourists, essays on some popular places are given. The book is simultaneously a photo album and contains a large number of photographs, including unique pictures of the living inhabitants of Lake Baikal.
