The introduction to the book gives a short survey of caddisflies, their biology and their biotopes which mainly are running waters. Problems of recording and collecting methods are discussed.
The traditional way of the study of organisms in their ecosystems is analytical, but often is correlation held for causality. In this book another way of understanding is presented. The visual aspect of a biotope which includes many details of landscape, underground, vegetation, sediment etc. may enable the observer to understand functional conditions and to predict to some extent the presence of species as well as their communities.
The book presents a survey of aquatic habitats with Trichoptera communities. Most important are the photographs of selected sites, together with the lists of species which were found there. Information is given on geographic co-ordinates, elevation, bottom and water temperature. The sites are arranged from north to south, from Lapland to Tunisia, with particular references to Central Europe (mainly represented by sites in Austria, northern Italy and southern France) and the Mediterranean area (mainly represented by sites in Corsica, Sardinia, Greece and Portugal). In addition, examples of tropical running waters in Thailand are presented in the same manner.
