If the bumblebee is to flourish, one place that can become its haven is the garden. Flowers, which are their food supply, are what every gardener grows. All gardeners aim to have flowers all the year-round and in great variety which is what bumblebees, and lots of other insects, need before anything else. However, bumblebees must also produce the next generation if they are to survive and what they seek as nest sites are not what the average gardener would consider being "neat and tidy". Bumblebees are like old mouse nests, holes in the ground, clumps of dead grass and untidy hedge bottoms. They are also fussy about what will make a good nest. Any old hole will not do.
