About this book

A study of the 39 true mangrove species, and the 86 mangrove-associated species found in India. This book is a compilation of 56 selected papers presented during a two day National Workshop on "Mangroves in India: Biodiversity, Protection and Environmental Services" on February, 7th and 8th, 2008. The workshop provided a common platform for discussions, learning and sharing of experiences among the stakeholders regarding the mangrove ecosystems in India. The major themes of the workshop were the status of biodiversity, ecosystem services, utilization of mangrove resources, policy and managements issues related to mangrove conservation. A detailed exercise was undertaken to revise and update the contents of these papers incorporating the latest data on the subjects dealt.

The papers are grouped under six sectoral themes: (i) status of conservation and management of mangroves in different States of India; (ii) floral diversity and ecology; (iii) faimal diversity and ecology; (iv) mangrove utilization and environmental services; (v) mangrove conservation initiatives and people's participation; and (vi) policy and legal issues related to mangrove conservation. It is hoped that this book will be useful for all the readers, specifically students, researchers and policy makers.
