About this book

Language: German

Martin Heinrich Rathke was a leading embryologist of the 19th century. In the first half, this work characterizes his professional and personal career, which was closely linked to the two cities of Danzig and Königsberg. This part includes extensive archive material revealing hitherto little known facts.

In the second part of his essay Menz looks at the scientific achievements of Rathke. The focus is on his important work on studies of invertebrates, discovering the gill slits in the embryonic development of higher vertebrates and his theories on development principles.
