This is the first volume of a scheduled 4-volume set. The Department of Valle del Cauca is one of the floristically most poorly explored regions of Colombia. Dichotomous keys to families, subfamilies, genera and species. All taxa are listed in systematic order (Szlachetko 1995). The examined specimens are listed in geographical order. Each record contains information about the locallity, date of collection, collector's name and number, and acronym of the herbarium where the specimen is deposited, The herbarium acronyms follow Index Herbariorum. Records obtained from the literature are supplemented with the publication's author and year. Distribution is given by dot maps. Further details for each entry include descriptions (stem, leaves, inflorescence, flowers, lateral sepals, lip, gynostemium), habitat, flowering, general distribution, and distribution in the department.
