About this book

This is the fifth in a series of ornithological gazetteers for the Neotropics. Like its predecessors, it began as incomplete card files maintained by the Museum of Comparative Zoology and Field Museum of Natural History and was finished after a review of all the literature on Uruguayan ornithology that the author has been able to discover. Unpublished data from specimens in the Museum of Comparative Zoology and the Field Museum also have been included, but, because of the impracticality and enormity of the task, not from museum Specimens elsewhere.

In the 13 years since the first edition of this gazetteer, publications dealing with the ornithology of Uruguay have appeared at a rate of about three per year. These, as well as several publications that had been overlooked earlier, have been incorporated in the present edition.
