About this book

Language: German

This work is aimed at decision-makers, but also at interested laypeople. It is intended to help understand the current levels of threat to ferns and flowering plants native to Carinthia, Austria's southernmost state. In addition, an understanding of the underlying risk factors should be developed. The knowledge of experts who have been dedicated to researching the flora of Carinthia for many years was meticulously compiled and put into context with developments in natural and landscape areas.

The relatively small federal state of Carinthia is home to an exceptionally high number of rare plant species and endemics due to its great climatic, geological and geomorphological diversity. The location at the intersection of several floral zones also results in a high level of biodiversity, which is sometimes only represented on a small scale and sometimes only selectively. In general, and also in Carinthia, the diverse and specialized flora is subject to continuous change. The speed and severity of these changes have increased significantly in the recent past and, as can be observed in many groups of species, resulting in a progressive impoverishment of the native flora. In total, 44 per cent of all native plants are currently subject to some form of threat. This work is intended to help raise awareness and show the need for action to preserve the abundance of plants.
