About this book

Language: French

The poor and sandy soils of the French Le Mans region have enabled the development of heaths, which are nowdays overgrown with resinous trees. Brooms, plants belonging to the tribe Genisteae, a tribe of evergreen, semi-evergreen, and deciduous shrubs in the subfamily Faboideae of the legume family Fabaceae, are shrubs typical of this environment. In the twelfth century they became the emblem of the counts of Maine, nicknamed the Plantagenets. This dynasty reigned thereafter over England. These rulers were surprised to discover that their name was related to sand deposits dated to about 100 million years.

The Le Mans region (Cenomanum) was chosen by Alcide d'Orbigny in 1847 as a new type of Cretaceous geological stage which is now the international benchmark of the Cenomanian stage. The goal of this book is firstly to discover the history of the study of the Cenomanian. Historic sites, most of which are now inaccessible, are also described. Secondly, the stratotype region is decrypted in order to understand the sequence of geological formations that make up the local Cenomanian, and then place them in the Paris Basin, and even more broadly around the world. An important part of this volume is devoted to the paleontology of the stratotype which is largely responsible for its selection by Orbigny. Some fossil groups, including molluscs, crustaceans and echinoderms are exceptionally rich. Finally, the stratotype Cenomanian, for its sites and collections, is an indisputable part of France's national geological heritage.
