The book is the result of many years of research of the biology and ecology of the Steller’s sea eagle. It is based on the original data collected mostly in Sakhalin, in the southwestern areas of the Sea of Okhotsk, and in the Lower Amur region, Russian Far East, which are supplemented with information from the literature for the entire range. The evolutionary adaptations of this species aimed at acquiring competitive advantages in unstable but highly productive environment are discussed. In the current increasingly changing environment, the large size, limited energy budget, tight confinement to coasts, high sensitivity to disturbance, and low reproductive rates make the Steller’s sea eagle an extremely vulnerable species. The prospects for the survival of this unique species depend primarily on an environmentally responsible approach to the development of natural resources in its habitats.

Книга представляет собой итог многолетних исследований биологии и эколо- гии белоплечего орлана. Она основана на оригинальных данных, собранных пре- имущественно на Сахалине, в юго-западном Приохотье и в Нижнем Приамурье и дополненных сведениями из литературных источников по всему ареалу. Обсуж- даются эволюционные адаптации вида, направленные на получение конкурент- ных преимуществ в нестабильной, но высокопродуктивной среде. В современной все более стремительно меняющейся обстановке крупные размеры, лимитирован- ность энергетического бюджета, тесная связь с побережьями, высокая чувстви- тельность к беспокойству и низкие темпы воспроизводства делают белоплечего орлана чрезвычайно уязвимым. Перспективы выживания этого уникального вида зависят в первую очередь от экологически ответственного подхода к освоению природных ресурсов в местах его обитания.
