This sumptuous collection – all 100 pictures awarded in the 2022 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition – displays a huge variety of subjects, styles and artistry. Chosen by an international jury from more than 38,000 submissions, images range from tiny living gems to dramatic and sometimes disturbing vistas. The highlights include unforgettable images of animal behaviour, extraordinary underwater scenes and reportage of our complex relationship with the natural world. Among the most imaginative pictures are the ones taken by young photographers, from Thailand to New Zealand to the US. Every image is accompanied by the story of how it was taken – not just the means and camera details but what it reveals, about the biology on display or the ethical or environmental issue portrayed.
Rosamund Kidman Cox has been intimately involved in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition since 1981 and is currently chair of the jury. She was the editor of BBC Wildlife Magazine for 23 years and has edited books including The Masters of Nature Photography and the Unforgettable series for the Natural History Museum, as well as Frozen Planet, Life, and Planet Earth for BBC Books.
