The main task of this paper was to give a summary of the centipedes of Carinthia and East Tyrol, which may be also of practical value to the interested layman. Many detailed depictions, short descriptions and especially accurate keys make the correct and quick determination of the regional species possible. The used nomenclature and taxonomical classification refers to the current relevant Catalogus Faunae Austriae, and so far confusing and partly false synonymy is being put right. Lists of distribution refer to all discoveries which were published up to now as well as to the most recent ones. Ecology, biology and the general distribution are largely unknown where the centipedes are concerned and could therefore not be treated. The collecting and preparation methodology is discribed in short introductory chapters and an introduction to the morphology of the centipedes is given. A usable synopsis as it is discribed in this paper is extensive an consumes a lot of time. Therfore it was preferred to first treat the Epimorpha entirely and to give a description of the Anamorpha and Notostigomorpha an a second chapter.
