The 2018 reprint of this German avifauna has split volume 2.1 into two new volumes, this volume 2.1.1. which covers the families Dendrocygnidae to Anatidae, and volume 2.1.2. which covers Pandionidae to Falconidae.

With its large river systems and the presence of Lake Constance, Baden-Württemberg is considered one of the most important resting and wintering areas for waterfowl in Central Europe. The state ornithologists are among the most meticulous data collectors and connoisseurs of the local birdlife.
