Kestrels in the UK have declined dramatically since the 1970s, most likely in response to changes in agricultural practices and land-use. They have adapted quite readily to man-made environments, however, and can thrive in busy urban areas, provided sufficient prey is available. Installing a kestrel nest box near to a railway cutting or brownfield site, where birds are likely to hunt, is therefore an excellent way of providing a safe, dry space for them to nest and raise their young.
The 2TF is designed to be installed on the external surface of a building, wall, chimney or industrial plant, and will provide a neat and unobtrusive addition to the structure. Manufactured from durable Woodcrete, a mix of concrete and wood fibres, the box is extremely long-lasting and is guaranteed for 25 years. It comes with a stainless steel bracket, screws, universal wall plugs, locking screw and installation instructions.
The box should be installed at a height of at least 6 - 8 metres and distance between boxes should be a minimum of 400m. To encourage use by kestrels, it is recommended to place a mixture of moist, coarse sawdust, wood shavings and washed sand in the bottom of the box.
