Gone Birding has started producing a series of video site guides for iPod Touch, iPad & iPhone. The guides, through a series of videos, take the user around a reserve in real time. They play a video at highlighted ViewPoints. The guides are aimed at beginners, families on a day trip or birders who've not been to the site before. The videos viewed in sequence take the user around the reserve showing them where to go, what to see and how to identify key species.
Where most Apps have little content and a few token video or sound clips, these site guides differ in as much as being video based, and due to their size (c 900mb) being too big to download via the app store. Currently, the videos come on a disk and are transferred via iTunes for Apple devices and can thus be loaded and deleted as required without permanently taking up precious space. Alternatively, as the movies are in the .mov format, they can be watched on Windows PCs with for example VLC Media Player. Other platforms and downloads will be the next step.
