There are over 700 species of trees and shrubs in Sri Lanka and for several years the standard book on the subject by Mark Ashton and others has been out of print. This new book by Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne covers 125 trees and uses over 500 photographs. It is a compact book, so these have to be relatively small images, but that does not matter. There is a description of each species and names are given in both Sinhala and Tamil. There is an introduction on the geography, climate and habitats of Sri Lanka. Coming from the UK I was struck by just how many of these trees are so stunning when they flower. The book makes me want to go back to the Sinharaja Forest Reserve – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where so many of these can be found, including about half of the endemic species. This is another great guide to Sri Lanka at a size and price which makes it both portable and affordable.
