The BTHK Tree-Roost Net is based on a design by Henry Andrews from the Bat Tree Habitat Key (BTHK) project.
The unique design of the net allows you to trap bats that are emerging from roost sites in trees. Placed in position prior to dusk, the net will catch any bats that fly out of the roost and keep them safely in the bag for identification, measuring and ringing.
The net head is diamond shaped and is designed to pivot in two places to ensure optimum positioning of the frame against the tree. When opened out fully the head covers an area of 80 x 50cm, although it can also be collapsed inwards by adjusting the side wing-nuts. The handle is made from lightweight aluminium and collapses down into three sections for ease of transport and storage.
The net bag is made from fine woven white nylon which is very soft and will not damage delicate wings or feet. The bag attaches to the frame using a strong polyester collar and velcro - this means that it can be removed for washing. The inside of the collar features a clear plastic rim which is 25cm wide; this prevents bats in the net from climbing out of the bag. The total length of the handle and frame is 4 metres and the depth of the bag is 1 metre.
