Malaise traps are used to efficiently sample large numbers of aerial insects, such as Hymenoptera and Diptera. The flying insects are funnelled through the trap and into a collecting bottle by panels of fine polyester mesh that will retain even the smallest Hymenoptera. Based on the Townes design, BugDorm's ez-II malaise trap has a modular construction that makes it simple to repair or replace components as they become damaged. Further instructions on replacing the panels and head are included in the "Trap Collection Head" manual that is included with the product. Although typically viewed as a long-term monitoring technique, the Townes design makes this trap easy to set up and reposition for shorter-term projects. It can be set up freestanding with a minimum of two guy ropes, saving time compared to a traditional malaise design, or it can be installed free-hanging from trees or bushes.
Malaise traps are capable of producing extremely large sample sizes and an appropriate conservation strategy should always be maintained.
