The ez-Migration Trap is a version of the malaise trap with two collecting heads.
It has been noted that, in a traditional Malaise design, insects migrate towards east facing heads in the morning and west facing heads in the afternoon, likely in accord with the heat of the sun. Therefore, results could be affected over the course of the day. The migration trap provides a solution to this issue by placing a collection head at either end of the design, not only decreasing the concern of trap orientation but also helping to determine insect flight direction.
Constructed from a tightly knitted polyester mesh that retains even the smallest Hymenoptera and Diptera around a structure of shock-corded poles, the migration trap is portable and easy to erect, making it suitable for short or long-term monitoring efforts. It can be deployed freestanding using a minimum of just two guy ropes or hung from the low branches of a tree as the researcher requires. The new modular design allows for parts to be replaced simply and at a reduced cost in the case of loss or damage.
Migration traps can produce extremely large sample sizes and an appropriate conservation strategy should always be maintained.
