About this book

Language: German

The gray owl, one of the most secretive birds of the taiga, is mainly to be found in the north of Europe and North America. It is excellently suited to life in the damp moss-covered pine forests. Its facial disc is the largest of all owls and exactly circular. This points to a sophisticated sense of hearing, which it has in common with other owls of the genus Strix.

The great grey owl is one of the largest owls, but its diet consists mainly of small mammals such as mice and shrews. The male alone hunts during the breeding season, and prey can be caught throughout the day.

Great grey owls in northern Europe usually choose old nests of hawks, buzzards or the golden eagle as a nesting site. In many areas, such as Central Europe, it is rare and only sporadically present, but in Sweden and Finland it is common. Usually, these owls lead a roaming lifestyle. In search of food, they migrate within the coniferous forest zone.

The author studied the great grey owl in Finland for over ten years. Extensive literature was carefully evaluated and compared in the present monograph with his own investigations.
