The different Canarian ecosystems shelter a varied and very interesting fauna, with a high proportion of endemic species, exclusive to the islands. Unfortunately, many of them are seriously threatened, calling for urgent and effective protection – as well as an adequate educational effort directed towards making the population environment conscious – in order to succeed in avoiding their extinction.
The extensive inventory of Canary Islands fauna comprises almost 600 species of fish, 72 of birds, 18 of reptiles, 38 of terrestrial and marine mammals, 2 of amphibians and several thousand invertebrates (insects, arachnida, molluscs, crustaceans, etc.).
In this map and corresponding explanatory book, a great part of each island's most characteristic animals are shown and described, with the object of it being useful, for in situ identification, to travellers and hikers interested in the wildlife of the Canary Islands.
