A good number of documents on the faunal diversity of various protected areas of Madhya Pradesh have already been published. The programme of study on the faunal diversity of Veerangana Durgawati Wildlife Sanctuary by the Zoological Survey of India is another attempt to document the faunal resources of this Wildlife Sanctuary from the state. The present document elucidates detailed information on the general feature of physiographic environs of the sanctuary, forest type, vegetation, as well as the faunal components and data collected and studied or observed during the exploratory surveys undertaken by the research teams of the Zoological Survey of India during the period from 2009 to 2012.

The document deals with 646 faunal species, comprising 363 species of invertebrates and 283 species of vertebrates. The invertebrate fauna consist of 48 species of zooplankton (Rotifera and Cladocera), 38 species of spiders, 1 species of sun spider, 4 species of scorpions, 38 species of dragonflies and damselflies, 2 species of praying mantids, 47 species of terrestrial bugs, 4 species of lacewings, 39 species of scarabeid beetles, 3 species of ladybird beetles, 27 species of butterflies, 90 species of moths, and 22 species of Mollusca. The vertebrate fauna comprises 19 species of fishes, 10 species of amphibians, 27 species of reptiles, 191 species of birds and 36 species of mammals. The document elucidates the species information related to the diagnostic characters of the species, their occurrence in the various habitats, geographic distribution, etc. The document concludes with a checklist of the fauna recorded from Veerangana Durgawati W1ldlife Sanctuary.
