About this book

Language: French

This work was originally intended for family use in order to better make known the work of the common ancestor to all branches of Loiseleur des Longchamps family today. Being neither a botanist nor a historian by training, the author's only ambition was to simply popularize a science that he has modestly approached. Continuing the work of his father Philippe, who had written a biography of Jean-Louis-Auguste Loiseleur-Deslongchamps under the title De Cèdre et de Rose, this essay, far from being exhaustive, will hopefully be followed by other, more scholarly accounts, recounting the immense work of this unknown botanist. In the author's family, Loiseuleria procumbens, a small azalea of the mountains, is well-known. The genus name of this plant is a botanical attribute, that is to say that it was given by another botanist in tribute to doctor and botanist Jean-Louis-Auguste Loiseleur-Deslongchamps (Dreux 1774 - Paris 1849). It is not so common that a plant name is given to a botanist, which honours his memory all the more. But do we know all his contributions in the inventory and nomenclature of plants in France? All the names of species of which he is the author? Nearly 400 taxa still exist in the botanical scientific nomenclature, although not all are valid. The important research work done in memory of the author's ancestor will familiarize the reader with all plants related to Loiseleur and Deslonchamps. Abundantly illustrated by photos of members of the SBCO, here is a living book that pays tribute to this great botanist whom we all know so little of.
