About this book

The standard text on the identification of the northern hemisphere's gulls, Gulls of Europe, Asia and North America covers the plumage variation through age and subspecies of all 80 species in the region. With exhaustive coverage, detailed maps, and superb plates and photos, Gulls of Europe, Asia and North America remains the definitive work on these birds, which represent the trickiest of all ID challenges.

  • Great guide but now quite dated.
By Arthur 31 Mar 2017 Written for Hardback
In the years since this book was published, there have been really significant advances in gull identification and species separation. It is, without a doubt, a must-have reference for the serious 'Guller'. I can't help but feel though that there will be a significantly updated publication out there relatively soon or perhaps a new edition once the stocks of the 2004 edition have been sufficiently reduced.

Media reviews

"A monumental effort by the authors and takes a worthy 'podium finish' in this year's award (the BB/BTO Best Bird Book of the Year 2005)."
– British Birds (Feb 2006)

"(This book) has taken gull identification to a very advanced level and argues for some controversial species splits."
– Wildlife and Countryside (Dec 2005)

"This book represents a significant contribution to the field of gull identification, and merits a spot on the bookshelf of every gull enthusiast. It greatly expands the coverage of earlier classics such as the works of Dwight and Grant, both in terms of geographic scope, and in attention to subspecific variation and the complexities posed by hybridization. The author is to be congratulated for providing a level of quantification not seen in earlier works, as well as for providing an impressive level of detail on distribution and population trends. Hans Larsson's plates demonstrate an impressive ability to capture subtleties of shape and intricacies of plumage that are vital in the identification of such a complex group of birds. The combination of photos with well-executed paintings is a most effective approach to illustrating this group of birds."
– Kevin J. Zimmer, author of Birding in the American West
