About this product

This Improved Crevice Bat Box is available with either a double or treble crevice. This box is designed to be suitable for the small British crevice-dwelling bats - the Pipistrelles, Soprano Pipistrelles and Barbastelle's - these species make up over three quarters of UK bats.

The external panels are made from 12mm Exterior Grade FSC plywood and are stained with black water based wood stain, both improve the boxes heat insulation. The multiple crevices allow for different temperature characteristics, and the internal ceramic heat sink improves temperature stability. The overhanging apex roof also provides protection from the UK weather.

There is a 'Bat Ladder' at the base of the box which facilitates bats landing and climbing into the box. This continues inside of the box making it easy for the bats to move around and grip the surface. The ladder acts as a 'convector heater' for the box - when the sun shines on the ladder, warm air rises into the box and does not come out when the outside cools.

The box is relatively lightweight and can easily and safely be mounted to walls or trees. The roof of the box can be removed for ease of cleaning, and a rectangular back plate facilitates fitting several boxes side to side to increase colony size.

  • occupied!
By Nigel 20 Sep 2014 Written for Treble Crevice
18 months after putting it up (2 summers) it is now occupied (september) - you can tell by carefully looking for the droppings + that bat flies around general vicinity of box at twilight. Never seen a bat before near our house before now.. Placed high on a SSE facing wall, about 5 feet below eaves overhang in surrey.
