About this book

Language: Spanish

This book is a two-volume monographic treatise on the trees and shrubs that grow on the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. It deals with both wild trees and shrubs as well as those naturalized and cultivated on a regular basis in parks, gardens, or avenues. It collects all kinds of information and curious data: the description of the plant and the family to which it belongs, its distribution, the place where it grows, the time of flowering, the origin of the scientific name of the genus and the meaning of the genus. the species, the type of wood, medicinal uses, popular or industrial applications, the poisonous or edible character, historical data and testimonies, the rarity and protected status, etc.

It is illustrated with 1,450 colour photographs, 30 morphology plates, and 592 plant drawings (about 1,000 drawings in all). The illustrations, along with various analytical keys, ensure easy identification of trees and shrubs, both for the nature lover and for those with some background in botany.

It also includes a complete introduction to the world of Botany, a description of the main Spanish forests and bushes, an index of common names – which includes names in all the languages spoken in the Peninsula –, an index of scientific names, a basic bibliography, an outline of the classification system adopted, which is quite modern, and an appendix giving the meaning of the plant name authors' abbreviations. The text has been deliberately written in a very simple way, avoiding technical names or explaining them where they appear, so that readers should not have the slightest problem in understanding it. Despite this, there is a very extensive glossary that includes not only botanical terms but also biogeographic and pharmacological terms.
