On the 15th July, 2016 UNESCO declared the Gorham’s Cave Complex in Gibraltar a World Heritage Site. Excavations at the Neanderthal sites in Gorham’s and Vanguard Caves have been ongoing since 1989 and the richness of the flora and fauna of Ancient Gibraltar became the inspiration for this book.
The authors set out to study and photograph the species whose remains showed up in the caves alongside the Neanderthals. The search proved to be a huge challenge as some of the species that had once lived on the Rock of Gibraltar are now very rare, and they had to travel, not only within the Iberian Peninsula, but to the High Arctic Tundra and the Equatorial Savannahs of Africa to find them. In fact, the project was to take them to remote locations, spanning 73 degrees of latitude and 111 degrees of longitude over the globe.
This book reveals some of the secrets of this World Heritage Site and its Outstanding Universal Value.
